Owner Responsibility

Aquarium ownership is all about being a good steward to the plants and animals you have chosen. It's about being responsible throughout the lifespan of the animal or your span of ownership.

Proper fishkeeping carries a great responsiblity as much or even more than other pet ownership. While it is true you can't walk your fish or cuddle with it on the couch, you carry the burden of caring for their every need. You can't just open the door and let them go in the backyard. You have to perform certain tasks. Sometimes certain tasks are easy and daily events while others are weekly or monthly or even less frequent, given the specific task.

More and more you are hearing about various exotic pets that are overtaking our native animals and environment. From monitor lizards to PACU fish in our freshwater rivers and lakes.

This is known as biological pollution. While it starts out with good intentions by people that do not want to kill their pets but turn them free. This does great harm to our environment. Once a specific exotic animal gets to a point where it can breed and have a sustainable population in it's new habitat. There really is not much that can stop it as many different animals thrive in our mild year-round climate. They compete for common food sources against our domestic and many times indiginous animals and can also hybridize our native animals. Long term effect of hybridization can cause extinction of our original wildlife.
